If you own any type of kitchen appliance, then it is important to know that it comes equipped with a temperature controller. Temperature controllers play an important role in keeping a wide range of appliances and other systems from overheating. There are various types of temperature controllers that are used to keep both your home and most businesses running.

What Are Temperature Controllers?

Temperature controllers are devices that are used to adjust and regulate how warm or cool an appliance is to ensure that its temperature stays within an acceptable range. Although changing the temperature of an appliance or other device seems as simple as turning a knob or pressing a button, understanding the science behind how temperature controllers work to quickly and accurately bring the temperature of a room or appliance can make it easier to determine how to fix any problem with a temperature controller before it causes problems for your home or business.

Where Are Temperature Controllers Used?

Various types of temperature controllers have dozens of uses in both private homes and a wide range of industries. They can be used to regulate the temperature of high-powered ovens in a hotel kitchen or the boiler in your home. Here are some of the most common places temperature controllers are frequently used:

Private Home Use

Temperature controllers are often used to heat and cool your home itself, and can also be found in several other common household appliances. Your heating and cooling systems, such as your air conditioner, are the most significant temperature-related aspects of your home. Smaller temperature controllers can also be found throughout your home in your oven, microwave, refrigerator, water heater, sinks, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, and other appliances that rely on being kept at a specific temperature to function properly.

Industrial Use

Temperature controllers that are much larger can also have important industrial uses. For example, various types of temperature controllers are frequently found in the healthcare, food service, packaging, and plastics industries. Certain types of temperature controllers are needed to heat seal packages, temporarily making the plastic pliable enough to mold into a wide variety of products, to help keep food and drinks within a safe temperature range until they are sold or prepared. Temperature controllers also keep food preparation appliances working properly, and preserve laboratory samples in the healthcare field.

The temperature that is needed for each of these processes falls into a very specific range that must be regulated to prevent melted or burned plastic, spoiled food, unusable lab samples, and other major concerns. For this reason, making sure that your temperature controller is working properly is essential in any of these industries to prevent wasted time and materials.

Types of Temperature Controllers

There are several types of temperature controllers available. Analog, limit, and general purpose controllers are among the most common for in-home use and in most industries. Here is what each temperature controller is used for:

Analog

Analog controllers are the most basic type of temperature controller and are generally among the least expensive options out there. Yet, they are versatile enough to function in a wide range of environments. However, they are not easy to read and have few other extra features, which limits their overall functionality.

Limit

Limit controllers cannot control temperature on their own, but they are frequently used alongside another control loop to improve the overall level of safety of the temperature controller. For example, a limit can automatically shut off a device if it exceeds the temperature it has been programmed to consider safe. This type of temperature controller can help to prevent fires, damaged materials, and other major problems caused by temperature issues, but it can only get the temperature moving by shutting the device off and cannot reset its temperature.

General Purpose

General purpose controllers are more complex and are used in most industries. With their ability to communicate and a wider variety of other features, general purpose temperature controllers are the best option for most types of industrial uses than their analog counterparts.

How Do Temperature Controllers Work?

Although the operations of your particular device largely depend on the specific function it is intended to provide, most types of temperature controllers of any size contain similar parts and work similarly. Here are some of the most important parts that make up the majority of temperature controllers and how they work:

Inputs and Outputs

Temperature controllers are primarily made from various types of inputs and outputs. The input is a type of sensor that determines when the temperature needs to be changed, and the output responds to the input and makes the necessary temperature change occur. Inputs may be activated when a person physically adjusts the temperature of a device, or they can be signaled to adjust themselves automatically. Outputs may involve automatic adjustments, or they may be programmed to turn on an alarm or other warning system, to let a person know that the device needs attention.

Some of the most common types of input sensors include thermocouples, resistive thermal devices (RTDs), and linear inputs of varying voltages. Common types of outputs include relay outputs, linear analog outputs, solid state relay (SSR) drivers, and triacs. Each temperature controller contains at least one type of input and output that work together to keep the temperature within a specified range. Some of the most complex devices that have the highest level of reliance on temperature may come with one or more backup input and output to help keep the device functioning properly if one fails.

Other Parameters

Several other parameters also play important roles in keeping a particular appliance at a set temperature level, including a setpoint temperature and an alarm value. The setpoint is the target temperature that the device has been set to, and is exactly what the temperature controller works to keep the device’s temperature close to. The alarm value is the highest or lowest temperature that is acceptable before the device activates an alarm to let the owner know it needs attention and potentially repairs.

Additional Features Temperature Controllers May Include

Temperature controllers may also include several types of additional features that improve their overall functionality. Some of these features can include temperature displays, web servers, timers, profile programming, and logic functions. These features improve the device’s ability to maintain a temperature within a very fine range, and communicate with its owner to keep them informed on how well the temperature is staying within the target range and when repairs may be needed.

At Lindberg Process Equipment, we prioritize helping our customers determine which devices are the best fit for them. Contact us today to learn more about choosing the right temperature controller for your home or business.

Glass has been an essential material in our day-to-day lives for thousands of years. Just think of all the items made of glass that we utilize each day: windows, computer screens, optical glass, mirrors, cookware, and more.

Over the years, glass manufacturing has adapted, and the industry has made efficient improvements to glass furnaces. Understanding industrial burners is essential when considering the best options for glass furnaces. Let’s take a look at regenerative glass furnaces, why Eclipse burners are necessary, and a few of the most sought-after Eclipse burners on the market.

What Are Regenerative Glass Furnaces?

Almost all modern glass products are produced in a furnace. Glass needs to be fired and melted in a furnace and molded at very high temperatures between 1400 and 1600 degrees Celcius or 2552 to 2912 degrees Fahrenheit.

Since glass furnaces require a great deal of energy to reach such high temperatures, furnaces have been designed to conserve energy and minimize heat loss. Regenerative glass furnaces are one kind of glass furnace that aims to do just that.

Regenerative glass furnaces have two chambers which each contain refractory material called “checkers.” Checkers are refractory bricks that have a high resistance to thermal shock and a high specific heat capacity. They operate as a thermal energy store. All regenerative glass furnaces feature similar components, such as:

Ports

The direction of gas flow in regenerative furnaces is periodically reversed from one chamber to the other every 15 to 20 minutes to allow combustion gas to use the thermal heat in the checkers. Because of this, all regenerative furnaces have an even number of regeneration chambers so that heat regeneration can occur in both directions. This process enables the furnace to recover lost heat and operate efficiently.

While regenerative glass furnaces are typically the most common choice for industry tradespeople, there are also other types of glass furnaces, including:

Recuperative Glass Furnaces

Typically, the heat transfer efficiency of recuperative furnaces is lower than regenerative furnaces. However, this type of furnace takes a different approach to reclaim waste heat. During the recuperative process, the chimney and gas inlets are paired with a radiative heat exchanger.

The heat exchanger allows for the continuous heat transfer from exhaust gas to combustion gas without a need for the gas flow reversal in regenerative furnaces.

Oxygen-Fuelled Glass Furnaces

Oxygen-fuelled glass furnaces are a new solution in the glass firing industry. These furnaces work by replacing the air entering the furnace with oxygen so that the total amount of gas entering the chamber can be reduced without affecting the performance.

Since oxygen has no adverse effect on the environment, dangerous emissions from molten glass are reduced. Generally, oxygen-fuelled glass furnaces utilize the same basic design as recuperative furnaces.

All-Electric Glass Furnaces

While the above conventional glass furnaces generally operate similarly, all-electric glass furnaces work differently. All-electric furnaces avoid gas combustion entirely and apply heat energy to glass mixtures through high-voltage electrodes instead. These furnaces are generally used for firing specialty glasses and fiberglass.

The Story Behind Nitrogen Oxide

In 1990, Congress made amendments to the Clean Air Act, which stated that stationary sources that emit 25 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) per year must find alternative controls. Glass melting furnaces fit directly into this category, so changes needed to be made.

Regulatory programs were implemented to control NOx emissions from glass furnaces, and new burner designs and high burner turndown ratios in regenerative furnaces were a critical component. During trials, single-hole gas burners were found to produce high NOx levels, while multi-hole burners had much lower NOx levels.

Eventually, throughout the trial and error of creating new burner designs to reduce NOx emissions, burners from the manufacturer Eclipse demonstrated NOx reductions on all regenerative glass furnace ports.

Industrial processing equipment covers a wide range of products that will end up in an assortment of manufacturing areas. Process equipment plays a prominent role in many reactions or operations that would not be possible under normal environmental conditions due to temperature, pressure, or safety reasons.

Modern advancements in technology in the industrial processing equipment used in the oil and gas, mining, general manufacturing, and construction industries can have a considerable impact on the speed, quality, and volume of production levels and facility return on investment.

For this reason, it is fundamentally important to choose the best industrial process equipment. When your business is in the market for industrial process equipment, there are two options: buying new equipment or buying used equipment. Just as you want to know what to consider when replacing your industrial steam boiler, it’s important to make the right decision with industrial process equipment.

It might seem like purchasing used equipment is the smartest choice and the easiest on your bottom line, but there are hidden considerations when choosing used equipment that you should take into account.

A Breakdown of The Real Cost

Work Requirements

Before you buy industrial process equipment, determine precisely what your business needs are. For example, you need to think about the characteristics of the machinery. If you need to customize the equipment in the future, it might be easier to start with new equipment. You can create a comparison sheet to compare and contrast the technical specifications of different machines.

Maintenance and Reliability

New equipment usually includes a warranty or a service plan that you can rely on when things go bump in the night. Machine faults bring unexpected downtime and costs. Used machines are more likely to develop breaks and failures that can lead to expensive shutdowns.

Sustainability and Efficiency

As technology changes and drives improvements in efficiency and sustainability across different industries, specific equipment uses significantly less energy than previous versions from years and decades past. A machine’s use of lubricant, bearing, seal wear, and other regular input also need to be carefully calculated.

Machine Life Spans

Older machines have already used some of their lifetime operating hours. The life span of aged equipment may be very different from the extended life span of a new machine, and the quality of the machine and how it is used should be taken into account.

Safety

As equipment grows older, it may present a more severe injury risk. Older equipment tends to need more service calls, meaning that employees may have to deal with more hazards. If the equipment has not been adequately maintained, it may be more likely to sustain dire failures.

Old Equipment Red Flags

The price point of used equipment can be tempting, but there are some potential issues you should look into before signing the dotted line.

Check the Fluids

The wrong color or consistency can be a sign to go elsewhere or ask for a lower price.

Operating Hours

As we stated previously, a machine only has so many lifetime operating hours. That is why it is imperative to know how long a piece of machinery has been in use before purchasing it.

Obvious Signs of Wear

Are there any signs of rust, cracks, or other damage that could suggest a more significant problem?

Maintenance Record

Ask to see the maintenance record. Were there any major repairs in the machine’s life?

Exhaust Color

Turn on the engine and let it run for a bit. Problems become more apparent during the first few minutes of running. Take a look at the color of the exhaust while it is running.

The Case for New Equipment

It can be challenging to dive in and fully commit to replacing old equipment with something new and modern. Industrial equipment often requires a significant expenditure of capital. It can also signify further training for employees who will maintain and operate them. Nevertheless, the benefits of new equipment can be substantial and lasting.

No Surprises

Major maintenance on a machine increases the risk of future defects. New equipment does not have a history of maintenance, and as we stated, they usually come with warranties and service plans that guarantee their performance. As a result, a percentage of the risk is transferred from the operator back to the vendor.

Leading Edge Technology

Transformative designs are changing the quality and efficiency of industrial equipment. There are fewer data inputs, less maintenance, and some machines even offer remote equipment monitoring to improve operational productivity and financial return on investment.

Less Worry

New equipment can be relied on to work as promised between regularly scheduled maintenance. For that reason, employees can spend more time being productive and less time on workarounds, or problem-solving equipment errors.

Breweries have become a staple on the American foodservice industry in recent years. From home microbrewing to large-scale operations, brewing is quickly becoming one of America’s favorite things to do. It’s no surprise, since the end result is so delicious.

The brewing industry in the Midwest is growing rapidly and many operations must adjust to keep up with the demand. Replacing your trusted existing heating system might seem risky, but utilizing improved, industry-specific brewing equipment can immensely improve your operation’s productivity and profitability.

Updating Your Existing Brewing System

Small-scale brewing operations can easily rely on electric heating elements, but once the need for increased output arises, steam-powered heating systems are the best alternative. Steam heating systems are preferred because they allow for more precise heating of the brewing vessels. The most essential pieces of brewing equipment for growing operations include:

Hot liquor tanks

Mash/lauter tun

Boil kettle

Fermenting vessels

Brite tanks

Kegs

Bottling mechanisms

There are many industry-leading manufacturers, like SPX, that specialize in the fabrication of of food and beverage equipment. Your local brewery process equipment sales representative can help you find and design the most efficient brewing operation using high-quality equipment from trusted suppliers.

Designing a Steam System for Your Brewing Operations

Designing a bigger and more robust steam heating system for your brewing operation might seem intimidating. If you’re unsure of exactly what you need, work with your brewing equipment sales representative to find the best heating systems to suit your needs. You’ll need to select a heating system based on your brewery’s size. There are three types of heating systems you can choose to implement in your brewery to heat hot liquor tanks and brew kettles:

Fire

Direct flame

Indirect flame

Electric heat

Steam heat

Many small-scale breweries operate on fire heat systems, but they’re less effective for larger operations since the heat is lost to surrounding air in larger spaces. Direct flame sources are the least expensive heating system for breweries, but often scorch the batches of beer affecting the taste significantly. An electric energy system is a good, moderately priced option for smaller operations, but becomes more expensive as brewing output and equipment size increases. The best option for growing breweries is a steam system. Your representative can recommend the best heating system with the right BTU ratings to allow room for growth and expanded productivity levels.

Opt for a low pressure steam system in your burgeoning brewery. This solution is the most expensive, but functions efficiently and heats vessels quickly. Steam systems are especially popular in large brewing operations because it’s a great way to heat in an extremely precise manner. This type of boiler system converts water into steam that enters the hot liquor tanks and boil kettles to heat the water inside.

One of the benefits of steam heat is that it’s incredibly easy to control, so you can adjust your settings to accommodate larger batches of beer as your brewery continues to grow over time. Electric heat, on the other hand, is a very direct and constant source of heat, similar to direct fire. These heat sources can scorch the liquid inside each vessel resulting in altered flavors and potentially ruined batches.

To ensure your brewery’s boiler system is working at peak efficiency, add extra steam risers to make the driest steam possible. The dryer the steam, the more productive your equipment becomes, allowing you to increase your output significantly. You can also use float and thermostatic steam drip traps to gather the excess condensation from the steam for use in future water heating, this way, your operation is using all the energy possible.

Selecting a Supplier

In the last ten years, brewing has exploded into the foodservice and hobby industries with impressive force. Large-batch breweries, microbrews, and homebrews are all popular endeavors for both business owners and regular people with some extra time on their hands. With the significant increase in brewing businesses, there is no shortage of brewing equipment suppliers. However, it’s crucial to research all your available options before settling on one specific supplier.

There is a wide variety of brewing process equipment manufacturers existing both in the United States and internationally at this time. When choosing a brewing equipment provider from overseas, remember a few key factors. Shipping heavy industrial equipment from another continent can be an incredibly costly expense. Frequently, overseas shipping can cost upwards of 10% of the price of the equipment itself. Purchasing equipment from non-U.S. providers also ensures a much more extended waiting period to receive your machinery. What’s worse than waiting for prolonged periods for a singular purchase?

If you opt for foreign-built equipment, you must also ensure that U.S.-based engineers design the equipment. This guarantees that your machinery is comprised of electrical components and design specifications suitable for use in America.

Most brewing operations prefer purchasing equipment from American manufacturers. Domestically designed vessels and other required machinery typically utilize highly standardized food-grade steel since the U.S. has such stringent food safety regulations. High-quality steel has a higher cost upfront, but when purchasing from a manufacturer in the U.S., you cut down on shipping costs. Overall, American-made machinery is a brewer’s best option for cost and food safety standards.

Conclusion

Growing your brewing operation is something to be incredibly proud of and excited about. However, updating your existing systems to put up with the increased output can seem costly and confusing. Replacement brewery equipment can help improve efficiency as your company continues to expand in an ever-growing industry. Contact a brewery process equipment company to consult with a sales representative about all your brewing system options.

Understanding the importance of a high-functioning heating system is essential to improving your brewery’s efficiency. Steam heating systems are a fantastic option for growing breweries and will wind up costing you less in the long run as your businesses productivity increases continually. Your local equipment sales representative will determine the necessary BTU requirements and recommend the right brewing equipment to bring your productivity to it’s peak. Contact a brewery process equipment supplier to consult with a sales representative about all your brewing system options.

Ice cream is a sugary, sweet treat universally loved by all. The process of making ice cream, both on a small, artisanal scale and an industrial food service scale, can be sweet, too, with the correct equipment installed.

When there are equipment failures in the ice cream making process, there is going to be a melted, sticky mess on your hands. Properly maintained ice cream making equipment could last up to 25 years, but sometimes it is necessary to replace your equipment to serve customers better.

Replacing Your Equipment

There are many reasons for ice cream making equipment failure that leads to replacement. Luckily, there are several innovative ice cream making technologies that will improve your production quality.

Recognizing potential issues and failures that may occur in ice cream making equipment can help business owners to be better prepared when their machinery nears the end of its life cycle. Here’s the scoop:

Potential Equipment Issues:

Power failure

Cooling and freezing issues

Thermostat and temperature regulation failures

Compressor issues

Ice build-up

General wear and tear

When any of these issues arise, many business owners try to put a bandage on the issue by providing maintenance and repairs. However, repair costs on industrial equipment can quickly mount up to the point where replacement makes the most financial sense.

Why Replace Your Equipment?

It is old and failing

It is no longer safe to operate

Inventory is being lost consistently due to power failure or cooling issues

Costs of constant maintenance and repairs are piling up

Productivity levels and revenue decrease when equipment continues to fail

The Best Replacement Equipment for Your Needs

Replacing malfunctioning or broken ice cream making equipment is the next step in producing higher-quality ice cream products. There is a wide range of machinery options available on the market today.

Considerations Before Replacement

Before you take on the financial responsibilities of replacing expensive industrial foodservice equipment, take time to consider the needs of your business. Whether you are in the industrial dairy industry or just a small mom and pop ice cream shop, there are a few questions to ask yourself as a business owner before deciding on the right replacement equipment for you.

Key Considerations:

Does your business provide products directly to consumers, or do you sell wholesale?

Is your business self-serve or full-service?

Does your self-serve ice cream business offer multiple flavors and toppings?

What is the serving volume of your ice cream making business?

Can the new machinery be repaired, serviced, and maintained easily by employees or management?

What is the expected life span of the equipment?

Each piece of equipment plays a critical role in the ice cream production process. The model of replacement equipment you need to make the best ice cream will depend on the type of product or products your business produces. Different types of ice cream products, like popsicles, cones, and pints, will require unique functionality from the equipment.

Benefits of Equipment Replacement

Allowing maintenance, repairs, and replacement to fall by the wayside can be extremely detrimental to the productivity of your ice cream business. Loss of product and revenue should be a surefire indication of necessary equipment replacement.

When you make a hefty business investment, it can be frightening to think that it was not worth it. But once the replacement of malfunctioning equipment is complete, the benefits will be readily apparent.

Implementing machinery with longer life spans and simplified maintenance and repair will result in a higher return on investment. Revenue will no longer be lost due to malfunctioning equipment, and the focus can return to producing high-quality ice cream products.

Adding machinery like ice cream decoration machines will also give you a leg up on the competition. These devices give your store the ability to offer more unique topics and filling flavorings for ice cream, popsicles, and cakes.

New processing equipment will increase levels of productivity. Assembly lines for items such as popsicles, pints, cones, and stick ice cream will be operating at a much higher speed, with a larger capacity. This ultimately means more money for your ice cream business. Plus, with automation, your workforce can focus on growing your business in alternative capacities.

The Final Scoop

Operating old, broken, or malfunctioning ice cream making equipment can not only be dangerous but can lead to the loss of valuable revenue. If you find yourself spending more on maintenance and repairs, and losing out on potential customers thanks to lost inventory, it may be time to consider replacing your machinery.

Take the time to break down the needs of your business in relation to the products that you provide. Research and learn more about the available ice cream making machines offered by a variety of manufactures and how they can improve your processes.

Depending on the operating conditions, site requirements, and optimal uses, there are several differences to consider when deciding between a centrifugal and reciprocating compressor for an application.

Operators have a lot of options for compressors, and the two variations we’ll be going over in this article can be a solution in a wide variety of applications.

When determining which solution works best, there are four main components to be especially aware of:

Overall cost

Flow rate

Efficiency

Multi-staging capability

What Is a Centrifugal Compressor?

A centrifugal compressor is a turbocompressor or dynamic compressor which has a radial design. This configuration works at constant pressure, which means that the performance is primarily affected by inlet temperatures and other external factors.

It works by drawing air into the core of a rotating impeller with radial blades. The air is pushed into the center by centrifugal force, thus resulting in rising pressures and kinetic energy. This energy is then converted into pressure by passing through a diffuser and volute.

A centrifugal compressor is a popular option for:

Oil and gas

Process industries

Wastewater treatment plants

High and low-pressure variants are used depending on specific applications and industries.

What Is a Reciprocating Compressor?

A reciprocating compressor utilizes pistons for compressing air and has a design that resembles that of an internal combustion engine. These pistons sit inside cylinders and are central to the primary function of the compressor.

For compression, the pistons draw back as gas gets injected from an intake valve in the compressor. After the gas is injected into the cylinders, it’s compressed by the reciprocating motion of the pistons.

Central Differences Between the Two

When determining the central differences between centrifugal and reciprocating compressors — both operational and efficiency distinctions exist.

Centrifugal compressors typically have much better isothermal efficiency. They also score higher on isentropic efficiency. These compressors also don’t require nearly as much maintenance as reciprocating compressors.

Reciprocating compressors, on the other hand, operate at much better efficiencies than centrifugal compressors when the pressure ratio is more than two. These compressors are also easier and cheaper to repair.

Operationally, centrifugal, and reciprocating compressors have varying volume and pressure features. For example, reciprocating compressors deal with pulsating air at a much higher pressure ratio. What this means is that they aren’t able to handle nearly as much air volume as centrifugal compressors.

Reciprocating compressors have a multistage operation. While advantageous for a wide variety of applications, multistage systems also run into a lot of problems, which is why they require more maintenance than their centrifugal counterparts.

Centrifugal compressors are much better for low pressure and high discharge operations because they work at a constant rate. The pressure ratio is also much lower at around one and four, while reciprocating compressors are around five and eight.

A reciprocating compressure is far more flexible than centrifugal compressors and works better with changing pressures.

Finding the Right Compressor

Finding the right compressor for your specific scope and operational need can be challenging. The right manufacturer with in-depth knowledge, experience, and a variety of options can be invaluable for many operations.

Environmental regulations and changing market conditions are constantly swaying the way industrial plants operate. Manufacturers, chemical processors, and oil-gas refining plants all utilize cooling solutions to moderate the temperature of the water they use every day.

Many of these cooling towers and solutions were put into place years ago and are quickly approaching the end of their service life. That’s why now, more than ever, it’s important for industry leaders to understand the various cooling solutions that are available so that there aren’t any hiccups in production, compliance, or efficiencies.

Various Types Of Cooling Solutions

Cooling Towers

There are many different types of cooling solutions for various industrial applications. Depending on what industry you’re looking at, there are primarily two types of cooling towers found out in the field.

Field-Erected Towers

These are usually found in chemical processing plants and refineries and are made for heavy industrial use and power.

Factory-Assembled Towers

Factory-assembled towers (FAP) are built in modules at a manufacturing facility first. They are then shipped to a plant and assembled on site. This model is fairly versatile and comes in various sizes for a variety of applications.

Either way, cooling towers provide essentially the same function — heat exchange. Water gets heated during industrial processes and needs to be cooled. To achieve this, there are a few steps that must happen.

Water is pumped to the tower through piping and out a nozzle

The water sprays onto banks of heat transfer material called “fill”

In the tower, it is exposed to as much water surface as possible

It is also exposed to air that is pulled through a powerful fan

Combination of air and water causes some of it to evaporate and cool

The cooled water is then pumped back into action

This process happens over and over again and is necessary for many industrial processes. Cooling fans provide an essential function for regulating the temperature of the water that is integral to the operation.

Companies like Howden provide a wide variety of cooling solutions for maximum efficiency and performance.

Heat Exchangers

While cooling towers do an exceptional job of mitigating rising water temperatures, there are some stipulations that restrict their use. Many of these cooling towers need clean water in order to effectively cool the water. If the quality of the water is low, you risk debris and particles clogging up fill and hurting your productivity.

For circumstances where clean water is expensive, unavailable or scarce — air-cooled heat exchangers work best. These are common in oil-and-gas industries where water maintenance isn’t a requirement. The downside is that heat exchangers don’t cool water temperatures as low as cooling towers. This is because air-cooled heat exchangers only use airflow to cool hydrocarbon products,

Milling is the manufacturing of metal products using inserts to remove material from a workpiece. The variety of shapes and sizes determines the cutting or removal of these materials from the object. This is why the quality of inserts are as important to the machinery as well as the workpiece.

Most beautifully finished metal products that are available for everyday use or production have been smoothed or finished by a metal milling insert. Milling inserts are replaceable bits that are used to machine tough some of the toughest materials. Some of the materials that they shape or cut are steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous materials, Titanium, hardened steel, and plastic.

These inserts are generally made of carbide, which allows them to be durable at extremely high temperatures and during high-speed applications for tasks such as drilling, hole making, finishing, etc.

Once limited to basic shapes, optimizations by manufacturers now allow for a wide variety of milling insert geometric styles that are referred to as elliptical, frustum and helical. Each shape is specific in size, figure, and tolerance determined by the temperatures, elements, and manufacturing task that are required of it.

Some features that will be important to consider when purchasing inserts are:

Shape

Teeth, which actually cuts the material

Flutes, which are the grooves between the teeth

Coating, which impacts the cutting process and tool life

What are the benefits of inserts?

There is a monumental amount of force placed on a milling insert while it’s at work. This use of an insert will:

Ensure safe and precise machining

Provide high metal removal rates in challenging conditions

Increase tool life

Provide reliable performance in dry and wet machining

Why should you choose Kennametal?

With over 75 years of experience, Kennametal’s carbide inserts are top notch, industry tooling favorites. Strong and rigid, their cutting tools or more specifically, milling inserts, allow for faster machining, leave better finishes on metal parts, and withstand higher temperatures as well as speeds.

Proof of it’s a trustworthy name and innovative products, Kennametal recently introduced noteworthy upgrades to their products. An example of this is their recent switch from alloy steels to pH stainless steels. Second, through the use of advanced insert mounting where the surrounding carbide body actually protected the drill body, differentiating them from the competition.

A well known a supplier of tooling and industrial materials, Kennametal guarantees outstanding performance in extreme conditions. Their services cover almost every manufacturing process making them a reliable name around the globe.
